Friends Centre recruit a range of volunteers across the organisation. Learning Support Assistants help others achieve their learning goals in classes. They help support individual learners in their literacy, numeracy, English language classes or adult general education classes. We also have volunteer opportunities to work with our Administration and Events/Fundraising teams. We are interested in hearing from anyone who can offer their time, skills and knowledge including those from a Black Minority/Ethnic background or who define themselves as having a mental or physical disability.

What sorts of people make good volunteers?
There is no such thing as the ‘ideal’ volunteer. Everyone brings their own motivation, skills, experience and personality into their voluntary work. However, there are some qualities that we feel volunteers need to have. These include being:
- Sensitive to the needs of others
- Honest and trustworthy
- Reliable and punctual
- Tolerant and non-judgmental
- Able to keep confidentiality
- Able to work on their own initiative and as part of a team
Training and support for volunteers
Induction into policies, procedures and Friends Centre ethos is covered at an informal interview. Learning Support Volunteers are invited to regular in-house staff training days. Volunteers are also made aware of any external training that may be of interest.
Support and guidance is provided by the allocated tutor or staff member or by the Volunteer Coordinator.
