Receptionist (Casual)                                                                                           


Reporting to Operations Manager

Salary £8.21 per hour

25 days holiday and 8 days Bank Holidays (pro-rata)


The post holder will be part of a casual pool team based at Friends Centre’s main teaching bases (Brighton Junction or Ivory Place) and is the first point of contact for people to Friends Centre for hires and classes running in the evening and at the weekends.


Key Responsibilities

General duties

  1. Provide a friendly welcome and maintain the ethos and values of Friends Centre to all learners, hirers and visitors to Brighton Junction responding to all enquiries
  2. Opening up the building, locking and alarming building as agreed with line manager
  3. Ensure the day to day or evening running of Friends Centre advising the Operations Manager of any minor repairs and maintenance to be carried out
  4. Ensuring rooms are clean and tidy
  5. Respond to all enquiries not related to Friends Centre made to the Brighton Junction reception
  6. Provide induction to organisations hiring rooms, in health and safety and fire evacuation (training will be given)
  7. Ensure that rooms are set up and a suitable learning environment created prior to classes /hires
  8. Buy supplies and prepare refreshments for hires and evenings and carry out all subsequent washing up/cleaning of rooms
  9. Ensure Health and Safety procedures are being adhered to by Friends Centre tutors and all organisations hiring our facilities
  10. Administer first aid and act as a fire warden (training will be given)
  11. Provide admin support to managers and all curriculum areas as and when required
  12. Maintain petty cash, income box, and cashing up when required


Technical Support (training will be given)

  1. Provide first level technical support for classes and hires
  2. Provide and set up equipment for classes and hires
  3. Be responsible for technical issues and deal with routine equipment problems and report all problems to the Centre Manager


From time to time the employee may be required to undertake other such duties as the employer may reasonably require.


Person Specification


  • Strong communication skills and ability to relate to students from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures
  • Friendly, personable, confident positive demeanour and diplomatic nature
  • Excellent IT skills especially in word processing, databases and spreadsheets
  • Highly motivated to work independently using initiative (with no manager present) but also the ability to be part of a team
  • High level of organisation and ability to set up and administer systems
  • Good team working skills with flexible and collaborative approach
  • Excellent time management
  • Fully numerate with a good eye for detail
  • Committed to the Friends Centre mission

  • Frontline experience of working with people from all backgrounds
  • Experience of working on a customer service, or information and reception desk
  • Experience of facilities management
  • Experience of handling cash and card transactions
  • Social media and marketing experience
