Unfortunately, over the past few years Friends Centre has suffered considerable financial difficulties related to changes in funding for adult education. More recently, the impact of closures and cancellations as a result of the Covid-19 restrictions have been severe. This means that the centre can no longer operate.
Friends Centre will close its doors for the final time tomorrow on 31st July and be placed in administration.
Friends Centre has been delivering adult education courses for 75 years and the closure of this centre will be a huge loss not just to staff, volunteers and learners but to the whole city. Many of us have worked here for over 10 years and the team are devastated that it will be closing.
The council were planning to take on the staff at Friends Centre, and deliver courses in the autumn term at Brighton Junction. Unfortunately, they have now changed their minds with just 4 days to go before the transfer of staff.
If you booked a course in the spring / summer term which was cancelled and are owed money, the administrator will provide details on how to claim this back once they are appointed.
If you have completed an accredited course and are waiting for a certificate please be assured that we will work with the administrators to ensure these are delivered to you once received.
If you have work at the centre that you need to collect, we will also make sure that we do our best to return this to you.
We are deeply sorry to be sharing this terrible news and hope that there will be other opportunities within the city or further afield for our staff and volunteers to continue their amazing work, and for our learners to continue to develop their skills.
You will all be greatly missed.
