This course aims to:

Discuss culture of female artists in the past 500 years.


Who this course is for?

This course would be suitable for anybody with an interest in the subject area. It does build on previous study for those who have experience, however it is also self-standing for those new to the subject. A glossary of terms and an introductory reading list will be given to learners.


What will I be able to do by the end of this course?

  • recognise and discuss the varied issues which inform Women, Art & Society in the past 500 years.
  • appreciate the historical, political and cultural debates that underpin visual images
  • develop appropriate verbal means to interrogate and explain visual phenomena and material culture
  • increase confidence to do individual research and to engage with ideas
  • recognise the cross cultural influences in artistic practice


What materials will I need for the course?

Notebook and pen for class notes

Reading lists will be given but no purchase is necessary

Handouts will be given for key issues

How will I know I am making progress?

The course will run chronologically so that each session builds on the previous one.

There will be group discussions

There will be open questions and answers weekly

Tutor will give advice on personal work/ research


Is there any extra study outside the class?

Not obligatory, though reading will be suggested weekly, as will any relevant exhibitions or television programmes


Who is the course tutor?

Jackie Parry has a BA and MA in Art History from the University of Sussex, where she has taught for over 20 years. Jackie is also an Associate Lecturer for the Open University.  She has a lot of experience in taking adult study trips to galleries in England and Europe, and gives individual lectures for various organisations such as The U3A, NADFAS and National Trust.


What next?

If you have an interest here you could move to another course by Jackie or other tutors in related areas – Art History, History, Cultural Studies, Local History – of which there is a wide range offered by Friends Centre. There are also options at other Adult Education Centres in the area, as well as courses and lectures at local art galleries and museums.
