On this course you will learn new skills and transform an old sweater into a cardigan, add panels to a T-shirt, turn your jeans into shorts or a skirt and add applique.

You must be able to use a sewing machine.

This course aims to:

Give you the skills and confidence to create new clothes out of your old or unwanted garments


Who this course is for?

Beginners or improvers. You must be able to use a sewing machine.


What will I be able to do by the end of this course?

Alter your clothes with increased confidence

Sew jersey fabrics

Add applique designs to clothes


What materials will I need for the course?

In the first session you need to bring with you a jumper / sweater that you wish to turn into a cardigan plus an extra strip of jersey at least as long as your jumper is from neck to hem and about 10cm wide. Please also bring buttons if you wish to add these to your cardigan.


During the rest of the course you will need: an old T-shirt to transform, a pair of old Jeans, patterned fabric to turn into appliques designs, coloured threads and other haberdashery items you’d like to incorporate.

The tutor will discuss this further in the first session.


Roughly how much will they cost?

Simple sewing kit can be from £1 depending on shop/quality of items

The aim is to reuse your old clothes so costs should be pretty low!

Friends Centre have sewing machine and basic sewing equipment that can be used (threads, needles, pins etc.)


How will I know I am making progress?

Discussion with the tutor throughout the course and self-assessment.


Is there any extra study outside the class?

You may need to finish things off at home sometimes. And you might want to source items or embellishments to add to your projects in class.


Who is the course tutor?

Anna Blencowe is a fashion textile designer working in Brighton. She has worked in the fashion industry since graduating with an MA from Central Saint Martins in 1998. She has created several of her own collections and has worked with the ateliers in Paris when designing for Plein Sud. Anna teaches a number of sewing and fashion courses at Friends Centre.
