This course is a follow on course to Brush up Your French and is for anyone who has attended at least one year of French study. This course is designed to help you improve and extend your French vocabulary and grammar.  We will study French tenses (past, present and future), pronouns, adjectives etc through well designed speaking, listening and written activities based on everyday life situations and French culture.  The course will look at different topics each term, allowing for new learners to join the group and current learners to develop their French further.

This course aims to:

Give students the opportunity to take part in discussion and debate in French on different topics relating to French culture, icons, way of life in France and current affairs. There will also be some written exercises and grammatical explanations. This course is ideal for lovers of France and French culture, someone with a house in France or someone with French relatives or acquaintances.


Who this course is for?

This course solely in French is for anyone who has grasped the basics in French and would like to improve their knowledge of the French language by developing their vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation.


What will I be able to do by the end of this course?

  • Feel more confident talking French in public and company
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of the studied topics relating to French way of life, culture and current affairs.
  • Describe, analyse and critique products of French culture such as film, art, popular culture and media, etc
  • Use different tenses appropriately (i.e present, perfect, imperfect, pluperfect, future and conditional).

What materials will I need for the course?

No particular material needed apart from a French dictionary.

When appropriate, the tutor will provide handouts as material for discussion.


Roughly how much will they cost?

French dictionaries cost between £5 to £10.


How will I know I am making progress?

Progress will be identified through observation during discussion and will be recorded on a class record sheet.


Is there any extra study outside the class?

Topics for discussion will be drawn from different sources such as newspapers, internet, magazines and recorded materials. You might be expected to do some written homework, some reading and research for the following week’s discussion.


Who is the course tutor?

Barbara is a native French speaker who now lives in Brighton with her family. She has a ‘RSA Certificate in Teaching Foreign Languages to Adults’ and has taught French at all levels for the past 18 years in adult education centres and colleges such as Friends Centre, BHASVIC and Varndean College.
