This course aims to:

Create an exciting opportunity to try out a variety of printmaking techniques. Create simple relief blocks using card and pressprint.  Design and carve a lino block, learn how to ink-up and print by hand, experiment with coloured inks and papers. The overarching aim of the course is to support learners to gain confidence to develop their own creative ideas into prints. There will be tutor demonstrations, opportunities to try other print techniques if applicable, printed samples and examples of the work of other printmakers throughout.

Who this course is for?

This course is suitable for complete beginners and those with previous printmaking experience who would like to refresh their knowledge and learn a different approach.

What will I be able to do by the end of this course?

  • create simple printing blocks using card, pressprint and found materials
  • design an image to be transferred to a lino block
  • use lino cutting tools with care and accuracy
  • ink-up printing blocks using single colours or colour blends
  • print using chine colle (applied fine paper) and a variety of different printing papers.

What materials will I need for the course?

  • an apron
  • a basic art kit for example, pencil, sharpener, rubber, scissors and a craft knife/scalpel
  • a sketchbook for ideas ( or available to buy from the centre)
  • printing paper (available to buy from the centre)
  • a folder to carry your work home when it is dry

Roughly how much will they cost?

Some of these things you may have already, sketchbooks are around £1.50 from the centre and paper 40p for a big sheet which would be cut down for printing.

How will I know I am making progress?

Throughout the session there are opportunities for feedback and discussion about progress and techniques with individuals. There will also be times when we share our work and give feedback as a group.

Is there any extra study outside the class?

No formal homework but learners are encouraged to develop their ideas in their sketchbooks in between classes.
