Our portrait painting course in Brighton will help you learn how to paint a portrait in water-based media. Explore how the pattern of light falls on the face, replicate this in inks and watercolours and develop your use of colour theory using acrylic paints.

This painting course is suitable for beginners and those with some experience.

The course cost includes a fee for the life model.

This course aims to: 

Give students the confidence to draw and paint faces and put heads on bodies.

Gain experience of painting techniques as applied to portraiture.


Who this course is for?

Beginners and those with some experience.


What will I be able to do by the end of this course?

  • Have the confidence in drawing and painting people.
  • Have a range of different drawing and painting techniques to call on.
  • How to layer up skin tones with paints.
  • Enjoy a new hobby.
  • Learn new techniques in different media.


What materials will I need for the course?

Pencil, charcoal, rubber, a set of chalk pastels (Inscribe 48 half sticks £12 are the best value for money). A set of watercolours, acrylics and an A2 or A3 spiral bound sketch pad.  Alternatively, paper can be supplied at cost.  A plastic portfolio to contain your work is useful, about £5.

Most materials can be supplied at cost.
