This portrait drawing workshop will teach you how to draw a portrait from start to finish.


This portrait drawing workshop is suitable for complete beginners and those with some experience.


Working from photos or a mirror, you will be taught a step by step structure on how to sketch out your portrait before completing in your choice of charcoal, oil pastels or soft (chalk) pastels.


Those with more experience will be taught about how to apply different facial expressions and angles.

This course aims to: 

Teach people how to draw a portrait step by step. You will learn about proportions and positioning of facial features, and there is opportunity to explore expressions and angles for more experienced students.


Who this course is for?

Suitable for both beginners and those with some experience of drawing who want to specialise in or develop their portrait drawing skills.


What will I be able to do by the end of this course?

  • Sketch out a basic portrait structure using a step by step guide
  • Use contours, tone and shading to portray 3D forms
  • Understand facial feature proportions and positions
  • Develop expressions or explore angles for more experienced students


What materials will I need for the course?

A3 sketchbook or loose paper, pencils, sharpener, ruler, white plastic rubber and soft putty rubber. Watercolour pencils and/or chalk pastels.


Roughly how much will they cost?

Between £10-20. Items can be purchased at a good stationer or from an art suppliers shop, alternatively online shops may be cheaper.


How will I know I am making progress?

You will be given one to one tutor feedback throughout the work.


Who is the course tutor?

Zara Slattery is a freelance illustrator with a BA Hons from Edinburgh College of Art and an MA in Communication Design from MMU, she has over twenty years’ experience of professional art practice. Zara is an Illustrator and Comic Artist who writes short story comics, she has a number of independently published titles and was shortlisted for the 2018 Myriad ‘First Graphic Novel Competition’. Zara has run a range of art courses at the Friends Centre since 2010 as well as schools and community workshops throughout London and Sussex. As part of the British Councils Dickens 2012 Bicentenary celebrations, Zara ran international comic workshops in Greece and Malta.


What next?

Continuation onto another drawing course at Friends Centre would allow more time to develop skills and confidence further.
