This pen and wash workshop in Brighton offers a taster opportunity to explore this diverse medium.
From fine line to experimental mark making, constrained palettes to riots of colour. On this pen and wash workshop we will use a range of paper, pens and brushes and together we will study the various forms of application of pen and wash through a variety of technique and subject matter.

This course aims to:
To introduce pen and wash techniques to beginners and enhance the confidence and skill of students already practiced in the art of pen and wash, through a series of traditional and experimental subject matter and themes. This is a taster workshop that will explore colour, washes, line and mark making in a fun and encouraging atmosphere.
Who this course is for?
What will I be able to do by the end of this course?
- Convey depth of field
- Understand of colour and mood
- You will have a practical knowledge of mark marking and wash application
- Discuss your own work, recognising the direction of your own practise and be able to offer fair criticism to others
What materials will I need for the course?
Please bring with you an A4 or A3 good quality sketchbook, ideally with watercolour paper, pencil, drawing pen, brush, watercolours or a small range of coloured inks

Who is the course tutor?
Zara Slattery is a freelance illustrator with a BA Hons from Edinburgh College of Art and an MA in Communication Design from MMU, she has over twenty years’ experience of professional art practice. Zara is an Illustrator and Comic Artist who writes short story comics, she has a number of independently published titles. Zara ran a Pen & Wash course at the Friends Centre for three years as well as schools and community workshops in Hackney, London. As part of the British Councils Dickens 2012 Bicentenary celebrations, Zara ran international comic workshops in Greece and Malta.
