You will draft a block pattern, create a toile to make sure your pattern fits, adapt your block pattern to your own design and then create the final garment.

The course is suitable for those who have a basic level of sewing skills and have experience of using commercial patterns.

Pattern drafting requires you to follow written instructions. You’ll need to have basic maths skills (divide, add, subtract) and be able to measure and draw accurately using tape measures and rulers with metric units (cm, mm).

This course aims to:

(NOTE: you may not have time to complete sewing your garment in this time; but you will have the knowledge of how to continue).

 

Who this course is for?

The course is suitable for those who have a good level of sewing skills and have experience of using commercial patterns.

What will I be able to do by the end of the course?

  • How to accurately measure yourself
  • Create a personal block pattern (card pattern template) *choose from skirt, trousers, shirt, blouse or dress
  • Create a toile (practise / sample garment) for your chosen garment
  • Add necessary seam allowance
  • Make garment and pattern alterations for a better fit
  • Recognise and use pattern markings (e.g. grainline, cut on fold, notches)
  • Decide on the best order of construction
  • Adapt your block pattern to different designs e.g. creating panels, adding pleats, moving darts, creating pockets, collars, cuffs and changing sleeve styles.
  • A wide range of sewing techniques including darts, pleats, seams, zips, sleeves cuffs, stitching hems and more.

 

The tutor will help you to make the best decision on the type of garment to choose, based on your level of experience and skills.  Please bring some ideas with you for a range of garment choices.

 

What materials will I need?

 

Pattern Master (metric ruler for creating your own pattern – see www.morplan.com OR similar items available from www.amazon.com

Pattern paper (dot and cross paper is included in the course cost and available from the course tutor.)

Manila card for creating a block pattern (included in the course cost and available from the course tutor.)

Fabric for constructing samples of techniques and a toile (e.g. calico, available for £2.50 per metre at the centre)

Basic sewing kit

We have lots of equipment in class but if you have your own please bring with you the following:

Fabric scissors, paper scissors, threads, chalk or other marking tool, pins, hand sewing needles, quick unpick tool, tape measure,

 

Sewing machine

Janome and Bernina sewing machines and overlockers are available to use at the centre although you can bring your own if you would prefer.

 

Roughly how much will they cost?

Simple sewing kit can be from £1 depending on shop/quality of items.

Pattern master costs from £10 – the tutor can advise on where to buy / what to buy in the first session

The following can be purchased from the tutor:

  • Calico £2.50 per metre
  • Manila card £1 per metre (this is provided as part of the course fee)
  • Dot and cross paper 50p per metre (this is provided as part of the course fee)

How will I know I am making progress?

Self-assessment against learning objectives each session, peer assessment, appraisals and tutor feedback.

 

Who is the tutor?

Jo Bunner spent 10 years as Fashion Designer/Pattern Cutter, specialising in ladies tailoring and outerwear: coats, suits and jackets following her graduation from the London College of Fashion. She is now a qualified Personal Image Consultant as well as teaching sewing and pattern cutting skills at local sewing schools. She has found that in helping others understand their own body characteristics it greatly enhances their sewing satisfaction.
