This course aims to:
Introduce learners a range of applications, from fine art to fine detail. Suitable for all abilities, learners will explore the medium through a range of diverse subject matter. From canvas to paper students will learn about colour, composition and form. New learners are welcome each term and current learners are encouraged to return to develop their skills further. Cost includes a fee for a life model for two sessions.
Who this course is for?
This course is open to enthusiastic students of all levels.
What will I be able to do by the end of this course?
- A working knowledge of a range of Acrylic paint applications
- Prime & ready paint surfaces
- Fine layered painting on watercolour paper
- Medium layered painting on canvas
- Prepare and paint an under painting
- Paint a portrait
- Paint a landscape
- Paint an experimental abstract
What materials will I need for the course?
- A4 Fine watercolour pad
- A4 Acrylic pad
- Basic set of 10 Acrylic paints
- Basic set of brushes that include fine point tips and flat brushes (graduate quality = best value)
- 2H pencil
- Pencil sharpener
Further materials will be suggested during the course.

How will I know I am making progress?
Through informal critiques, group discussions and by keeping a brief weekly diary about your current work and weekly feedback.
Is there any extra study outside the class?
You will be encouraged to keep a sketchbook, collect images of interest/inspiration and do occasional research.
Who is the course tutor?
Zara Slattery is a freelance illustrator with a BA Hons from Edinburgh College of Art and an MA in Communication Design from MMU, she has over twenty years’ experience of professional art practice. Zara is an Illustrator and Comic Artist who writes short story comics, she has a number of independently published titles. Zara ran a Pen & Wash course at the Friends Centre for three years as well as schools and community workshops in Hackney, London. As part of the British Councils Dickens 2012 Bicentenary celebrations, Zara ran international comic workshops in Greece and Malta.
