On this mixed media art course in Brighton you will be encouraged to delve into and develop design ideas through mixed media.

The course gives you the opportunity to work with a range of methods, referring to various art practices.

We will research art movements and approaches such as collage/ montage, realism vs abstraction, paint practices and application.

The tutor will provide demonstrations and assistance where required and the teaching approach will help you to work within a framework whilst still giving you the freedom to generate your own ideas and develop your art skills, techniques and designs.

This course aims to:

Teach an understanding of composition, colour, design, editing as well as various art methods in different media.


Who this course is for?

For anyone wishing to get inspired by images colour and texture, and may not have confidence with art technique. Or those who already have some art experience, who would like to broaden their methods.


What will I be able to do by the end of this course?

  • Have a better understanding of how to put an image together using composition, design and editing
  • An initial knowledge of collage
  • How to combine materials in a single image
  • An understanding of colour theory
  • Articulate and discuss my work- method and approach


What materials will I need for the course?

A3 cartridge paper

Glue- Pritt Stick and/or PVA glue

Small set of Acrylic paints – red, blue, yellow and white.

Medium/ small sized acrylic ‘filbert’ soft haired brush

1 ink – preferably black

Ink dipping pen

We will monitor your progress, through 1-1 and informal discussion.


Is there any extra study outside the class?

Optional tasks will be set.


Who is the course tutor?

Amy Alderson is a freelance artist with her own company providing art for film, media, galleries, art spaces and by commission.  She studied art at Hampstead School of Art and St Martins College London and gained a BA Hons in Visual Arts and Dance at the University of Brighton.  She has a strong working knowledge of teaching gained from current role as a further education art teacher and from previous positions including tutoring at Sussex Downs College.   Her commissions include the British Museum, key artist on award winning film, Peter, Praslin Pictures; galleries include the ICA the Naked Eye Gallery and In-house Artist at the Brighton Artists Gallery.
