A machine sewing course in Brighton for beginners.


You will learn how to make a cushion cover or tote bag while you get to grips with your sewing machine: how to thread it, wind a bobbin, change and use different stitches.

This course aims to:

Introduce students to the basic principles of sewing and using a sewing machine. You will have the choice of making either a tote bag or cushion cover.


Who this course is for?

Beginners with little or no experience.


What will I be able to do by the end of this course?

  • ‘Read’ and understand a basic pattern
  • Prepare fabric for cutting and cut out fabric
  • Transfer pattern markings to the fabric
  • How to thread up a machine
  • How to wind a bobbin
  • How to sew and neaten seams using different stitches – straight and zig zag


What materials will I need for the course?

0.5m of woven fabric (i.e. not stretch) – cotton, denim are ideal

1m cotton webbing tape (for the tote bag only)

Thread to match. Note: it is best to buy a good brand like Coats or Gutermann, the cheaper ones tend to break; Moon thread is a good option.


Patterns for both the tote bag and cushion will be provided.


Basic sewing kit

We have lots of equipment in class but if you have your own please bring with you the following:

Fabric scissors, paper scissors, threads, chalk or other marking tool, pins, hand sewing needles, quick unpick tool, tape measure,

Sewing machine

There are machines at the centre but you can bring your own if you wish – It is important that you have your own machine at home to continue working on your garment. We have a range of Janome and Bernina machines to use.


Roughly how much will they cost?

Simple sewing kit can be from £1 depending on shop/quality of items

Fabric costs from about £1 per metre

Brighton Sewing Centre sell fabric and webbing.


Who is the course tutor?

Jo Bunner spent 10 years as Fashion Designer/Pattern Cutter, specialising in ladies tailoring and outerwear: coats, suits and jackets following her graduation from the London College of Fashion. She is now a qualified Personal Image Consultant as well as teaching sewing and pattern cutting skills at local sewing schools. She has found that in helping others understand their own body characteristics it greatly enhances their sewing satisfaction.
