A machine sewing course for beginners and improvers in Brighton.
Do you want to learn how to use a sewing machine or develop your current skills?
Learn how to thread your machine, adjust stitch size and styles and troubleshoot basic problems as they arise. During this practical course you will gain confidence in using the sewing machine while creating a range of items including a bag, cushion cover, tote bag, zip purse and simple clothes.
This course is aimed at complete beginners or those with some experience of using a sewing machine.

This course aims to:
Teach learners how to use a sewing machine and to create simple gifts and items for the home. Projects will include making a cushion cover, bunting, tote bag, and using applique for a cushion cover or other project. The tutor will discuss projects with you and will be guided by the class decisions on which projects would be preferable.
Who this course is for?
Anyone – beginners to using a sewing machine or those with some experience.
What will I be able to do by the end of this course?
- Thread a machine
- Wind a bobbin
- Change a needle
- Understand different stitch lengths their uses
- Adjust the tension on the machine
- Understand different stitches and their uses
- Use a sewing machine with confidence
- Troubleshoot problems when they occur.
What materials will I need for the course?
Advice will be given in the first session on additional materials to purchase.
Roughly how much will they cost?
£ 5-10 Friends Centre will provide materials if you are unable to purchase your own.
How will I know I am making progress?
Weekly assessments of progress will be made with 1-1 feedback.
Is there any extra study outside the class?
Projects can be finished off at home if not completed in class.
Who is the course tutor?
Jo Bunner spent 10 years as Fashion Designer/Pattern Cutter, specialising in ladies tailoring and outerwear: coats, suits and jackets following her graduation from the London College of Fashion. She is now a qualified Personal Image Consultant as well as teaching sewing and pattern cutting skills at local sewing schools. She has found that in helping others understand their own body characteristics it greatly enhances their sewing satisfaction.
