This course aims to:
Teach learners how to use a sewing machine and to create simple gifts and items for the home. Projects will include making a cushion cover, tote bag, and / or pyjama trousers. The tutor will discuss projects with you and will be guided by your decision on which projects would be preferable.
Who this course is for?
People who have little or no experience of sewing by machine.
What will I be able to do by the end of this course?
- Thread a machine
- Wind a bobbin
- Change a needle
- Understand different stitch lengths their uses
- Adjust the tension on the machine
- Understand different stitches and their uses
- Use a sewing machine with confidence
- Troubleshoot problems when they occur.
What materials will I need for the course?
50 – 75cm of woven fabric (i.e. not stretch) to make a cushion cover cotton, denim are ideal – please also bring a cushion to cover.
50 – 75cm of woven fabric to make a tote bag
2m cotton webbing tape
2-2.5m (depending on width) of woven fabric to make pyjama trousers
Thread to match your fabric. Note: it is best to buy a good brand like Coats or Gutermann, the cheaper ones tend to break.

How will I know I am making progress?
Weekly assessments of progress will be made with 1-1 feedback.
Is there any extra study outside the class?
Projects can be finished off at home if not completed in class.
Who is the course tutor?
Jo Bunner spent 10 years as Fashion Designer/Pattern Cutter, specialising in ladies tailoring and outerwear: coats, suits and jackets following her graduation from the London College of Fashion. She is now a qualified Personal Image Consultant as well as teaching sewing and pattern cutting skills at local sewing schools. She has found that in helping others understand their own body characteristics it greatly enhances their sewing satisfaction.
