This course aims to:

Introduce learners to knitting gloves or mittens and demonstrate a range of knitting techniques

Who this course is for?

Those who have completed a ‘Beginners Knitting’ course or students who are confident in casting on and off and working knit and purl stitches

What will I be able to do by the end of this course?

  • Cast on using the cable method
  • Work in rib
  • Increase stitches by ‘making a stitch’
  • Follow a colour chart to work an intarsia or Fair Isle pattern (if desired)
  • Use a variety of stitches to create a pattern (stitch type dependent on style of glove / mitten)
  • Use mattress stitch to sew seams with an (almost) invisible stitch
  • Adapt a pattern to create a better fit (e.g. for longer / shorter fingers)

What materials will I need for the course?

  • Assorted yarns
  • Knitting needles
  • Yarn sewing needle
  • Scissors

Please bring double knitting yarn in your choice of colour or colours and knitting needles in size 3mm to 4mm depending on your preference. Thinner yarn (3 ply / 4ply) and thinner needles (less than 3mm) will be avoided since these are more difficult and slower to work with.

A choice of patterns will be provided but you are welcome to bring your own.

Yarn, needles and scissors can be provided if you are unable to provide your own.

How much will these cost?

Knitting needles can be bought from the tutor or charity shops from as little as 50p, acrylic yarn starts from around 50p for a 25g ball.
