Learn more about what you can do with Word – including creating posters, adverts and letters. Find out more about using the internet for online shopping and planning your journeys with Google Maps. Improve your knowledge of email including how to create groups, forwarding and deleting emails.
Who this course is for?
This course is suitable for those who have already completed an Introduction to IT course or confident beginners with some knowledge of using Word, internet and email.
What will I be able to do by the end of this course?
- Recognise the names of computer parts
- Recognise the main icons used on the computer
- Create and save a picture using Paint
- Type, format and save a letter in Word
- Add a picture to a letter in Word
- Use spell check, add a header and footer, create, modify and format a table in Word
- Create an advert using Word
- Create a menu in Word using guidelines
- Create and organise computer files and folders
- Use favourites and downloads
- Add items to an online shopping basket
- Search for a map, use street view and find directions
- Sign into your email account, add people to your contacts and create a group
- Send an email using CC and BBC options and discuss the purpose of these
- Sign-out of your account
If you have previously attended a Next Steps in IT course before you will cover different outcomes
What materials will I need for the course?
Ring binder, notepaper and pens, a memory stick is also an option if you would like to save a copy of your work.
Roughly how much will they cost?
Ring binder, notepaper and pens £2, memory stick depending on size costs around £10.
How will I know I am making progress?
The tutor will discuss aims and outcomes at the beginning of each lesson and then refer back to these at the end of each session to check what has been learnt. The tutor will provide informal feedback during the course and evaluation forms will be used to indicate what you know at the beginning and end of the course, to show your progress, as well as learning journals being used through the course.
Is there any extra study outside the class?
It is optional to practise the work covered in the lessons outside of the class. You will need a computer with Microsoft Word and access to the Internet.
Who is the course tutor?
David Purkiss is an adult education tutor with over 10 years’ experience. David teaches at Friends Centre, PACA Adult Education and the Hangleton and Knoll IT project (HaKIT), delivering computer drop-ins, taster sessions and courses. He has a 2:1 in Computing and Information Systems from Brighton University, holds a First Class: An Introduction to Teaching and Learning OCN Level 3 and has most recently completed the PGCE Teaching course at Greater Brighton Metropolitan College.
