German art was neglected and uncollected in Britain due to the lure of Italy from the 16th century and politics in the 20th. It has however a very strong tradition which has been hugely influential. This short course will look at Durer (Vasari’s Northern genius) and Cranach. It continues with C D Friedrich’s Romantic landscapes in the 19th century and examines the Nationalism inherent in early 20th century Expressionism and finally looks at the later work of Beuys, Kiefer and Richter (probably the greatest living artist). There will be a gallery visit.
