The 17th century saw dramatic changes as a result of the Reformation and Catholic Counter Reformation, the opening up of trade and the Atlantic, revolutions in science and culture. This course examines the responses that developed in Italy, Spain, France, England and Holland – where artists such as Rembrandt, Velazquez, Rubens and Vermeer established what would be a lasting influence in painting. These artists will be set within their separate contexts and there will be two gallery visits.
