A sewing course in Brighton for complete beginners or those with some sewing experience.
Learn how to make a garment of your choice using a commercial pattern. The course will take you through the whole process including selecting and cutting the correct size, cutting out fabric, sewing darts, pleats and seams, inserting zips and stitching hems.
Sewing machines and overlockers are available to use although you may find it useful to have your own sewing machine to continue your garment and practise techniques at home.

This course aims to:
Teach students how to make a garment using a commercial pattern. Complete beginners are advised to come to the first class before buying a pattern or fabric. Those with experience of using commercial patterns can bring a pattern for a garment of their choice.
Who this course is for?
Beginners with little or no experience or improvers who want to expand their sewing knowledge and skills.
What will I be able to do by the end of this course?
Can include, but not limited to:
- Select and cut out appropriate sized patterns
- Prepare fabric for cutting and cut out fabric
- Transfer pattern markings using tailor’s tacks
- Sew darts and seams
- Insert zips
- Attach facings and/or waistbands
- Sew hems
- Sew buttons and buttonholes
- Insert sleeves
- Make a garment that fits!
What materials will I need for the course?
In week 1 the tutor will discuss the equipment, suitable patterns and fabrics and where these can be purchased. Improvers can bring a commercial pattern and fabric for their chosen garment.
Basic sewing kit
We have lots of equipment in class but if you have your own please bring with you the following:
Fabric scissors, paper scissors, threads, chalk or other marking tool, pins, hand sewing needles, quick unpick tool, tape measure.
There are machines at the centre but you can bring your own if you wish – It is important that you have your own machine at home to continue working on your garment. We have a range of Janome and Bernina machines to use.
Roughly how much will they cost?
Simple sewing kit can be from £1 depending on shop/quality of items
Patterns cost from around £5 **Do note, most shops will not refund on patterns so choose wisely!**
Fabric costs from £1 per metre and students will require 1.5 – 3m dependent on pattern and size.
Help and guidance will be provided in the first session on what will be required and where to purchase it.
How will I know I am making progress?
Self-assessment against learning objectives each session, peer assessment, appraisals and tutor feedback.
Is there any extra study outside the class?
Students may wish to continue creating their garments and practising techniques outside class. Although this is not compulsory, students will progress further by practising their techniques at home.
Who is the course tutor?
Jo Bunner spent 10 years as Fashion Designer/Pattern Cutter, specialising in ladies tailoring and outerwear: coats, suits and jackets following her graduation from the London College of Fashion. She is now a qualified Personal Image Consultant as well as teaching sewing and pattern cutting skills at local sewing schools. She has found that in helping others understand their own body characteristics it greatly enhances their sewing satisfaction.
