This course aims to:
Ideal for all abilities, this course aims to introduce learners to drawing with soft pastels and pastel pencils. From sketching to fine art, this versatile medium has a sculptural quality. Using a range of subject matter (still life, portraits and landscape) we’ll explore a variety of application techniques, from block colour to blending. This course will cover composition, line, colour and form and will encourage learners to discover and develop a technique that best suits their practice.
Who this course is for?
This course is open to enthusiastic students of all levels.
What will I be able to do by the end of this course?
- Have working knowledge of hard & soft chalk pastels.
- Blend and layer pastels.
- Create detail definition.
- Create depth of field.
- Tackle a range of subjects including:
- Figurative drawing
- Still life
- Town & Landscape
What materials will I need for the course?
- A4 coloured sugar paper pad
- A4 Bristol board
- Coloured watercolour pencils
- Pencil sharpener
- Pastels: 3 good quality soft chalk pastels, any colours, light, medium tone and dark (not black)
- 3 good quality hard chalk pastels, any colours, light, medium tone and dark (not black)
Further materials will be advised throughout the course.

Through informal critiques, group discussions and by keeping a brief weekly diary about your current work and weekly feedback.
Is there any extra study outside the class?
You will be encouraged to keep a sketchbook, collect images of interest/inspiration and do occasional research.
Who is the course tutor?
Zara Slattery is a freelance illustrator with a BA Hons from Edinburgh College of Art and an MA in Communication Design from MMU, she has over twenty years’ experience of professional art practice. Zara is an Illustrator and Comic Artist who writes short story comics, she has a number of independently published titles. Zara has run a range of art courses at the Friends Centre since 2010 as well as schools and community workshops throughout London and Sussex. As part of the British Councils Dickens 2012 Bicentenary celebrations, Zara ran international comic workshops in Greece and Malta.
