This drawing course in Brighton will help you learn to draw confidently in a fun, encouraging atmosphere.


This drawing course will use a series of short exercises to explore the art of drawing. From pencil to brush we look at different techniques that allow us to confidently lay down lines, develop form, plan compositions and create the illusion of perspective.


This drawing course is open to all abilities.

This course aims to:

Teach techniques that will enhance drawing ability. Through a series of exercises and a range of materials, learners will develop their hand eye coordination and learn how to tackle scale, form and foreshortening with ease. Learners will be encouraged to free their drawing hand and approach the page confidently.


Who this course is for?

This course is open to enthusiastic students of all levels.

What will I be able to do by the end of this course?

  • Use techniques to draw objects, people and buildings to scale
  • Have an understanding and working knowledge of perspective and foreshortening
  • Developed the artists hand; movement and laying down lines and 3D forms
  • Developed the artists eye; strengthened hand eye coordination


What materials will I need for the course?

HB pencils, sharpener and eraser. A4 or A3 good quality sketchbook. Further materials to be advised during the course.


Roughly how much will they cost?

In the region of £12 – £20 for essentials


How will I know I am making progress?

Through informal critiques, group discussions and by keeping a brief weekly diary about your current work and weekly feedback.


Is there any extra study outside the class?

You will be encouraged to keep a sketchbook, collect images of interest/inspiration and do occasional research.


Who is the course tutor?

Zara Slattery is a freelance illustrator with a BA Hons from Edinburgh College of Art and an MA in Communication Design from MMU, she has over twenty years’ experience of professional art practice. Zara is an Illustrator and Comic Artist who writes short story comics, she has a number of independently published titles. Zara ran a Pen & Wash course at the Friends Centre for three years as well as schools and community workshops in Hackney, London. As part of the British Councils Dickens 2012 Bicentenary celebrations, Zara ran international comic workshops in Greece and Malta.
