Comics and graphic novels are a great way of telling stories, documenting life and making complex issues accessible. Whether it’s travel diaries or epic fiction, from planning to final panels, this graphic novel course will provide an introduction to drawing your comic/graphic novel.

This course aims to:
Introduce learners to sequential art and give them the opportunity to learn how to interpret reference material and develop a story. This course will give students the opportunity to develop different approaches to writing and drawing a comic or graphic novel. Through a range of exercises we will explore this unique way of documenting life, literally and metaphorically. Through discussion and practise we will look at how we may express the everyday, the observational and emotional responses in comic form.
Who this course is for?
This course is open to enthusiastic students of all levels.
What will I be able to do by the end of this course?
- A working knowledge of layout, pacing and perspective.
- Develop a narrative from an object.
- Write a graphic narrative from gathered reference material.
- Express conversations in comic form.
- Represent the metaphorical self in visual forms
What materials will I need for the course?
A4 Cartridge paper, coloured watercolour pencils, HB pencil, eraser, pencil sharpener,30cm ruler.

Roughly how much will they cost?
In the region of £10 – £20.
How will I know I am making progress?
Through informal critiques, group discussions and by keeping a brief weekly diary about your current work and weekly feedback.
Is there any extra study outside the class?
You will be encouraged to keep a sketchbook, collect images of interest/inspiration and do occasional research.
Who is the course tutor?
Zara Slattery is a freelance illustrator with a BA Hons from Edinburgh College of Art and an MA in Communication Design from MMU, she has over twenty years’ experience of professional art practice. Zara is an Illustrator and Comic Artist who writes short story comics, she has a number of independently published titles and was shortlisted for the 2018 Myriad ‘First Graphic Novel Competition’. Zara has run a range of art courses at the Friends Centre since 2010 as well as schools and community workshops throughout London and Sussex. As part of the British Councils Dickens 2012 Bicentenary celebrations, Zara ran international comic workshops in Greece and Malta.
