A drawing workshop in Brighton that will concentrate on drawing animals of all shapes and sizes!


Learn how to draw animals in this four hour workshop where we will be studying a variety of specimens from the local Booth Museum.


Suitable for complete beginners and those with some experience.


Expert tips and guidance will be provided by your tutor though more experienced students will have opportunity to work more independently if they would like.


You will need your own choice of drawing media, loose paper and a drawing board or sketchbook to work on/in.

This course aims to:

Give structure and guidance for drawing animals, how to sketch out initial shapes and apply a range of drawing media to create animal likeness.


Who this course is for?

Suitable for both beginners and those with some experience of drawing who want to specialise in or develop their animal drawing skills.


What will I be able to do by the end of this course?

  • Observe animal forms more effectively
  • Sketch out key shapes to provide a basic structure
  • Apply a range of drawing techniques and materials to create textures seen in animal fur, feathers and skin.

What materials will I need for the course?

To start please bring an A3 sketchbook or loose paper, pencils, sharpener, ruler, white plastic rubber and soft putty rubber.


To finish – Your own choice of drawing media which may include: Willow and compressed charcoal, coloured oil pastels or coloured chalk (soft) pastels, graphite, ink and dip pens, sketching pencils and coloured pencils. Feel free to bring a range.


Roughly how much will they cost?

Between £10-20. Items can be purchased at a good stationer or from an art suppliers shop, alternatively online shops may be cheaper.


How will I know I am making progress?

You will have a better understanding of how to sketch an animal and create a likeness in your chosen media.

Who is the course tutor?

Frances West is an artist and illustrator working in Brighton. She is a practising artist who specialises in drawing, ceramics, illustration and printmaking, which she studied at Winchester School of Art. She has a BA (Hons) in Fine Art and a PGCE teaching qualification.


What next?

Continuation onto the Drawing for Beginners and Improvers or Intermediates course at Friends Centre would allow more time to develop skills and confidence further. You may also choose to come to other one day drawing workshops or various art courses at Friends Centre.
