This course will focus on the journey from page to stage of a chosen text and through play reading, discussion and analysis we will consider ideas for set, costume and characterisation. Together we will read and discuss two plays that explore family ties. The first play is ‘Rutherford and Son’ by Githa Sowerby written in 1912 and set in a Salford glass works. The second play will be ‘Dancing at Lughnasa’ written by Brain Friel in 1991 and set in rural Ireland in 1936. We will be able to contrast the film version of ‘Dancing at Lughnasa’ with the play. There are no entry requirements for the course and it is for those who enjoy reading and lively discussion.
