This course aims to:

Develop your knowledge of crochet techniques and stitches whilst creating flower and leaf shapes. You will make up individual items of your choice by following written and diagram patterns (which you will be guided through).

There will be a variety of patterns available that will be suitable for different levels of experience. From daisies created from double crochet and chain stitches, to more complex designs using up to triple treble stitches. We will also be discussing how you can freestyle your own flowers.

You will crochet individual flowers and leaves which you can join into a long garland or you may prefer to turn them into brooches. They can also be taken home to use for embellishing clothing or accessories.

Who this course is for?

Suitable for those who know the basics of crochet i.e. making a slip knot, working a foundation chain and basic stitches of chain, double and treble crochet.

What will I be able to do by the end of this course?

  • Demonstrate how to crochet a flower and leaf pattern using a variety of stitches.
  • Discuss how to create shapes by using different length stitches.
  • Demonstrate how to count stitches.
  • Follow a written or diagram style pattern.
  • Demonstrate how to create a simple garland.

What materials will I need for the course?

Please bring your own crochet hooks and yarn if you have some. You can choose the thickness of yarn you prefer to work with although ‘Double Knitting’ and 3, 3.5 or 4mm hooks are ideal. Materials will be provided if you are unable to bring your own.

Roughly how much will they cost?

Hooks will be available to purchase to take home from 50p, or a set for £4. If you require yarn to finish your crochet at home we will take donations e.g. 50p/£1 depending on how much you require.

Who are the course tutors?

Jayne Eagle is an artist/maker whose work has incorporated many forms of textiles, sewing and sculpture. After initially learning to crochet blankets for her newborn, this developed into a passion and led to her designing her own range of patterns for toy animals and dolls.

‘I have always had a love for the handmade and traditional craft. It’s such a tangible way of connecting to our heritage whilst discovering new skills’

Jayne has a Fine Art MA from Brighton University and has exhibited in the UK and abroad.

Laura O’Sullivan came to Brighton many years ago to do a 3D design degree and has since become (amongst other things) a jeweller, project manager, photographer, teacher and parent.  I guess you could say I have a fear of missing out as I have done most crafts at some stage! My most recent passion is sewing, especially dressmaking. What I love about crochet is it’s easy to learn, has many creative uses and is great therapy for bored hands and busy minds.
