This course aims to:

This course will develop your skills in creating crochet motifs and introduce you to a range of new stitches.  We will make sampler squares of each stitch which can be joined to make a bigger piece of ‘crochet fabric’ suitable to produce a cushion cover or small blanket. The aim is to make four squares, one of each stitch, then further squares can be continued at home to complete the bigger project.

Who this course is for?

Suitable for those who know the basics i.e. making a slip knot, working a foundation chain and basic stitches of chain, double and treble crochet.

What will I be able to do by the end of this course?

  • demonstrate how to work in rows
  • how to count crochet stitches
  • demonstrate how to increase and decrease stitches to make waves
  • follow instructions and a pattern to make shell, clusters, and bobble stitch
  • demonstrate how to join squares to make a bigger piece of crocheted fabric

What materials will I need for the course?

All materials will be provided but if you have your own crochet hooks and yarn you are welcome to bring these to use.  We will be working with yarn of ‘double knitting’ weight and using crochet hook of 3, 3.5 and 4mm but any thickness of yarn and hook can be used. Wool or Crochet cotton are ideal. (NB thin yarn is harder to work with.)

Roughly how much will they cost?

Hooks will be available to purchase to take home from 50p, or a set for £4. We will some have yarn you can use and will take donations e.g. 50p/£1 depending on how much you require.

Who are the course tutors?

Jayne Eagle is an artist/maker whose work has incorporated many forms of textiles, sewing and sculpture.  After initially learning to crochet blankets for her newborn, this developed into a passion and led to her designing her own range of patterns for toy animals and dolls.

‘I have always had a love for the handmade and traditional craft. It’s such a tangible way of connecting to our heritage whilst discovering new skills’

Jayne has a Fine Art MA from Brighton University and has exhibited in the UK and abroad.

Laura O’Sullivan came to Brighton many years ago to do a 3D design degree and has since become (amongst other things) a jeweller, project manager, photographer, teacher and parent.  I guess you could say I have a fear of missing out as I have done most crafts at some stage! My most recent passion is sewing, especially dressmaking. What I love about crochet is it’s easy to learn, has many creative uses and is great therapy for bored hands and busy minds.
