Ready for the next step in your writing journey? Develop your writing craft further with this follow on to our popular Creative Writing course. This course is designed to help keen writers build on the basics and learn more advanced skills and techniques.
Each class will be a combination of instruction, writing, conferencing, and sharing. We will examine a wide range of styles and genres of published writing, finding inspiration and opportunities through short guided activities to experiment in your own writing. Elements of craft we’ll explore more deeply include point of view, pacing, setting, characterisation, and use of dialogue.
You’re invited to work on an existing project, or start something new and exciting.
You may wish to bring a laptop to produce writing in class.

Who this course is for?
This course is for anyone who has discovered the joy of creative writing and would like to challenge themselves to strengthen their writing skills. We will explore excerpts from published texts and practice new techniques through engaging in-class activities.
What will I be able to do by the end of this course?
- Recognise the impact of point of view
- Further develop your own voice and writing style
- Understand key considerations of pacing
- Effectively use dialogue to advance the narrative
- Use characterisation techniques effectively
What materials will I need for the course?
A laptop or a notebook to write in class.
Roughly how much will they cost?
Bring your own laptop or borrow one from the centre – you will need to bring a USB pen drive to store your work.
How will I know I am making progress?
- You will receive regular informal feedback from your tutor
- Through group discussion and workshopping
- You will feel more confident and satisfied with your writing
Is there any extra study outside the class?
You will be invited to complete short writing tasks in-between classes to help you practice the skills you have learned. You may also be asked to read short pieces of published writing to prepare for the next meeting. These activities are optional but will help you get the most out of the course.
Who is the course tutor?
Louise Dobson is a certified English Teacher with 7 years of full-time teaching experience. She holds an MA in Education, and an MSc in Journalism.
Louise has a passion for building writing communities where participants enjoy the support of a group and the expertise and experience of a professional tutor. Her friendly, approachable manner, and infectious love of writing ensure her classes are stimulating, constructive and enjoyable for all.
As a freelance journalist Louise has been published in major newspapers, including The Chicago Tribune and The Washington Post, and has been a frequent contributor to Psychology Today. Most recently, she has established the Brighton Writing Project which promotes social and creative growth through writing together.
