During this course you will learn a variety of decorative and functional stitches that can be used to create your own textile art.

You will be guided through simple fabric collage and finger-turned appliqué whilst being encouraged to experiment with colour and texture.

There will be an opportunity to complete a project and turn your textile into a keepsake.

This course aims to:

Introduce hand/slow stitching and teach learners how to create texture and pattern through the combination of fabric and stitch.

New skills and simple embroidery techniques will be introduced each week.

We will be looking at how to use and incorporate different types of textiles, experimenting with shapes and colour.

Learners will be encouraged to explore their own creativity through play and experimentation, gaining confidence to produce their own hand sewn textiles.


Who this course is for?

This course is suitable for complete beginners or machine sewers who would like to learn a different approach.


What will I be able to do by the end of this course?

  • work a darning/straight stitch
  • work a backstitch
  • work a drawn line/shape in stitches
  • work a seed stitch
  • work a blanket stitch
  • demonstrate a finger-turned appliquè shape
  • demonstrate simple fabric collage


What materials will I need for the course?

Materials will be provided but please feel free to bring your own sewing tools if you have them.


Who is the course tutor?

Jayne Eagle is an artist/maker whose work has incorporated many forms of textiles, sewing and sculpture.

Jayne has a Fine Art MA from Brighton University and has exhibited in the UK and abroad.
