Learn to trace a pattern without cutting up your original garment on this workshop in Brighton.  Bring along your favourite garment and create a pattern for a replica.

During the day you will learn the very basics of pattern cutting including how to trace off a pattern from a garment, copying any shaping such as darts or gathers and adding seam allowance to the pattern.

We will also discuss how to construct the new version in a professional way (although you are unlikely to have time to start this).

By the end of the day you will have a pattern for your favourite garment which you can take home and use to construct a replica garment.

You should bring along a simple garment to work from.  You must be able to use a sewing machine and have some knowledge of how to make clothes.

This course aims to:

Teach students the basics of how to copy a pattern from an item of clothing without cutting the original one up.  Add seam allowance to the pattern, and understand what to look for in how to construct the new version in a professional way. You should bring along a simple top, skirt, or loose fitting pyjama type trouser to work from. E.g. A tank top or simple blouse/shirt. (Avoid garments that have been cut on the bias or that have too many pattern pieces.)

Who this course is for?

Beginners or improvers. You must be able to use a sewing machine.

What will I be able to do by the end of this course?

  • Trace each pattern piece of the garment onto pattern paper
  • Add seam allowance and notches to pattern
  • Check measurements of pattern pieces against each other.
  • Prepare fabric for cutting and cut out fabric
  • Transfer pattern markings using pins or tailors tacks
  • Understand how to work out construction of original garment

What materials will I need for the course?

  • A simple top, skirt, or loose fitting pyjama type trouser that you wish to copy
  • Fabric of the same type as your original (don’t buy something stretchy for a non-stretch top)
  • Masking tape.
  • Basic sewing kit
  • Any finishing that are on the original garment, e.g. buttons, zips, and sewing thread to match your fabric

Roughly how much will they cost?

Fabric costs from £1 per metre and students will require 1.5 – 3m dependent on garment and size.

Simple sewing kit can be from £1 depending on shop/quality of items

How will I know I am making progress?

Discussion with the tutor throughout the day and self-assessment.

Is there any extra study outside the class?

This day is designed to teach you how to make the pattern but you will most probably need to construct the garment at home.  Bring along your fabric, as you may well get the pattern cut out in fabric within the day.
