A cable knitting course in Brighton for improvers.

Have you mastered the basics of knitting and are you ready for a new challenge? Try out cable knitting techniques to add texture and detail to your knitting.  It’s really not as complicated as it may look!

Learn how to use a cable needle to create twisting and travelling cables, form knitted bobbles, follow a pattern and get to grips with some of the abbreviations associated with cable knitting.

This is not suitable for complete beginners, you should already be able to cast on and off, knit and purl.

This course aims to:

Introduce learners to cable knitting, working twisting and travelling cables with the use of a cable needle.

Who this course is for?

Confident beginners who can already cast on and off, knit, purl and work simple shaping techniques.

What will I be able to do by the end of this course?

  • Create simple twisting cable stitches without a cable needle
  • Use a cable needle to create twisting and travelling cables
  • Form knitted bobbles to add texture in your work
  • Follow a pattern and begin to recognise some of the abbreviations used in cable knitting patterns

What materials will I need for the course?

All materials will be provided and you can purchase needles and yarn to take home.

We will be working with 4mm needles and double knitting (DK) yarn. Thicker needles (e.g. above 4mm) and thicker yarn (e.g. chunky) may also be used.  Thinner yarn (3 ply / 4ply) and thinner needles (less than 3mm) will be avoided since these are more difficult and slower to work with.

If you have your own knitting needles and yarn you are welcome to bring these to use.

How much will these cost?

Knitting needles can be bought from the tutor or charity shops from as little as 50p, acrylic yarn starts from around 50p for a 25g ball.
