British art in the 20th century was fighting to be accepted by critics who saw all modern developments being part of a European model. It will consider how through the graduates of the Slade and those who attempted to work in the modernist tradition, Britain began to establish a distinctive and individual tradition. Amongst artists to be examined are Paul Nash, Stanley Spencer, David Jones, John Piper as well as those connected with Bloomsbury. There will be a gallery visit to Pallant House, Chichester.
