Fed up with badly fitting, uncomfortable or boring bras? Then join us on this course where you’ll learn the techniques and skills to sew your own bra.

You will make a full band bra in duoplex which can be worn with or without underwire. Complete beginners to bra making will make the ‘Classic’ bra and those who have already tried and tested this pattern will be working on the ‘Shelley’ pattern by Pin Up Girls. The pattern, fabrics and findings will all be supplied.

This is for experienced sewists and those improvers who are up for a challenge! You must be confident in using a sewing machine, cutting out fabric, basic sewing principles and able to follow a pattern.

This course aims to:

Teach you all the techniques and skills to sew your own bra.

On the Saturday we’ll introduce you to the fabrics, findings (all the trims and notions!) and techniques involved in making a bra.  Then you’ll measure, cut out and start sewing your own sample bra*.

On Sunday you will complete sewing your bra and then try it on for fit.

You will be taught how to make any necessary adjustments for a great fit and how to transfer these alterations to the pattern so you go home with your personalised bra pattern and the key skills, experience and inspiration to replicate in colours to match every outfit!

On this course you will make a full band bra (‘Pin Up Girls’ Classic Bra) which can be worn with or without underwire. For those who have already made the ‘Classic Bra’ you can try out the ‘Shelley Bra’ which is slightly more complicated and incorporates lace. The pattern, fabrics and findings will all be supplied.

*Because of the nature of bras, it is important to complete a sample bra in the correct fabric and findings to properly assess for fit. As such, this first bra may not fit as well as you would like, but you will go home with a pattern for a bra amended to your own personal shape.

Who this course is for?

This is for experienced sewers and those improvers who are up for a challenge! You must be confident in using a sewing machine, cutting out fabric, basic sewing principles and able to follow a pattern.

What will I be able to do by the end of this course?

  • Measure accurately and select the right size of pattern
  • Recognise the types of fabrics and haberdashery required for bra making
  • Work with stretch fabrics such as Duoplex and Powernet and lace (Shelley bra only)
  • Understand how to calculate % stretch
  • Apply a range of bra type elastics
  • Insert underwiring (if required)
  • Use ¼ inch (6mm) seams
  • Choose appropriate type and size of machine needle for the fabric you are using
  • Create a full band bra
  • Take home a pattern which you can reuse to make more bras!

What materials will I need for the course?

We will provide the fabric (Duoplex and Powernet), findings, pattern and thread.

For the first session please wear or bring:

  • Your favourite and/or best fitting bra
  • A vest top or other close fitting top to allow for precise measuring

Once you have booked on the course we will contact you and ask what colour you would like to choose for your bra and what size you normally wear for your pattern.

We will be using the Pin Up Girls ‘Classic Bra’ or ‘Shelley Bra’ Pattern. NOTE: it is recommended to start with the classic bra if you have not sewn a bra before.

If you have the following tools & equipment please bring them with you: (you can borrow these from the centre if you would prefer)

  • Tape measure
  • Paper scissors
  • Fabric scissors
  • Small snips / embroidery scissors
  • Pins (for stretch fabric if possible)
  • Ball point / stretch sewing machine needles
  • Hand sewing needles
  • Chalk or fabric marker
  • Sewing machine – you may wish to use your own to familiarise yourself with the stitches used in bra making. We have a range of Bernina and Janome machines to use at the centre.
  • Notepad, pencil, pen

Is there any extra study outside the class?

You won’t need to do anything in between sessions but after the weekend you may wish to try out your new bra making skills to make up more bras in a range of colours!
