This course is ideal for anyone who is a complete beginner to WordPress, website design and management. Learners who already have experience of using WordPress are very welcome to come along if they would like to refresh their knowledge.
By the end of the day you will have your own website that you can develop further at home.
Previous experience of using a computer is essential and learners should be familiar with word processing software and copy/paste functions on a PC or Mac.

This course aims to:
Introduce you to the WordPress online software. Learn the basics to enable you to design, build and publish your own website.
Who this course is for?
Whether you already have a site and want to manage it properly or are starting completely from scratch, this is the course for you. We’ll create a website in the classroom from the beginning and be able to customise it to suit your needs, as well as looking at lots of options for further developing your site after the workshop. Some previous experience of using a computer is essential.
What will I be able to do by the end of this course?
- Apply an attractive design using easy templates
- Set up and run a great website of your own
- Add content, images and videos
- Look at adding structure and navigation menus
- Add contact forms and maps
- Add widgets and features for social networking
We will also discuss how to:
- add other features and functionality you need to run and develop a fantastic website
- get your own domain name
What materials will I need for the course?
A laptop will be supplied for you at our centre. It is recommended that you bring any content (text and images) you’d like to put onto a website with you on a USB stick. You are welcome to bring your own laptop to use if you would prefer.
A pen and notepaper is recommended to help you make notes.
Roughly how much will they cost?
A USB pen drive usually costs between £5-20 depending on the size
How will I know I am making progress?
The tutor will offer carefully designed tasks where you will be able to practise using WordPress to set up your website. The tutor will also be able to assess your progress through visual results and your understanding of the course material. The tutor will offer feedback on your website to help you improve. By the end of the workshop you should have made significant progress improving or setting up a website.
Is there any extra study outside the class?
We recommend that you continue developing your website after class in order to keep the content updated.
Who is the course tutor?
Philip Bedford has a BA in Photography obtained from the University of Brighton in 2009 and a teaching qualification (PTTLS) obtained from Friends Centre in 2011. He also teaches at Portslade Adult Learning and facilitates workshops in photography for all ages. He manages Friends Centre’s website –through WordPress – as well as his own websites for photography.
