The Friends Centre has a vacancy for a .6 FTE (3 days a week) Information and Guidance Practitioner. The post is initially until the end of March 2011 with a view to extending this if funding is extended.
The post holder will provide information and advice about learning and work for a wide variety of learners and other eligible individuals. The post requires a pro-active approach, working with partner organisations to identify individuals and conduct interviews, assessments and set up skills accounts.
In addition the post will include elements of support for clients around their literacy and numeracy.
The ideal candidate will have experience in delivering IAG to a broad client base and have a level 4 qualification. They will also have an understanding of the MATRIX standards.
This appointment is initially until March 31st 2011 with the expectation that it will be extended should funding be confirmed.

The Friends Centre has a vacancy for a full time (37 hrs per Week) Skills for Life tutor to work on our Step by Step project which provides literacy and numeracy teaching and support to homeless people. This post is initially until end of March 2011 with a view to extending this, subject to continued funding.
The project will include consultation and research with homeless and insecurely housed people and housing agency staff in Brighton and Hove, and planning and delivering Skills for Life (Literacy and Numeracy) short and long term courses to people who are homeless or have a history of homelessness. In addition the post will include elements of support, training and advice for housing support staff working with clients around their literacy and numeracy.
The ideal candidate will combine experience of Skills for Life teaching and of working with this client group. This appointment is initially until March 31st 2011 with the expectation that it will be extended should funding be confirmed.

Friends Centre needs volunteer learning support assistants who are interested in helping others achieve their learning goals. Volunteers help support individual learners in their literacy, numeracy or English language classes. Other volunteers help tutors prepare resources.
There is no such thing as the 'ideal' volunteer. Everyone brings their own motivation, skills, experience and personality into their voluntary work. However, there are some qualities that we feel volunteers need to have. These including being:
We offer our volunteers a range of training opportunities, including basic skills awareness, disability awareness, supporting adult learners. These may be accredited courses or short workshops.
