Architectural Styles in Brighton & Hove

The City of Brighton and Hove has some wonderful architecture in its housing, ranging from Regency to Modern. This course examines the architectural style and development of the city.

Eighteenth Century Art: Watteau to Goya

A study of the richness and variety of 18th Century painting tracing the major trends of European Art from the Rococo style of Watteau to the romantic expressiveness of Goya. There will be a visit to The National Gallery, the cost of which is not included.

Painting & Patronage: The Pre-Raphaelites and Victorian Painting: Romanticism to Aestheticism in 19th Century British Art

Art in the 19th century was diverse: beginning with the universal academic rules it evolved into a mirror of Victorian culture whether that was romanticism, realism or what was often seen as subversive aestheticism. This course focuses on artistic ideals and practice generated in the wider 19th century. There will be a visit to Tate Britain, the cost of which is not included.

World of the Victorians and Edwardians

The 1820s - wonderful Regency suburbs, appalling poverty in part of the town centre. The 1840s-1870 saw the emergence of a wider social structure, political campaigning to improve the town and Victorian railway suburbs.
