English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

Do you need help with your English?
The Friends Centre has been awarded the Quality Mark, which means we offer a recognised quality ESOL programme.

How can I improve my English at the Friends Centre?
Don't worry if you think you don't know any English! We offer classes at many levels. There are classes from Beginner level to Advanced. We will help you work on grammar, new words, speaking, listening, reading and writing.

We want to give you the courses that you need. Maybe you want English to help you get a job, to learn to use a computer, or just to speak to people in your area!

Here are some of the courses that you will be able to choose from:

English for life in the UK
Improve all your skills to communicate with people in your area (for example: school staff, doctors and shop assistants).

This course could help you with a naturalisation application. It is free, but also available as a Fast Track course (12 weeks) for a fee of £110.

English for work
Learn the language you need to talk to managers, workmates and customers in different jobs. We also offer Business English.

Reading and Writing
Improve your spelling and learn how to write different texts like forms and letters

Health Studies
Join a course to prepare you for work (or more study) in the Health sector (hospitals, for example)

Questions And Answers

How will Friends Centre know my level and what I want to do?
We will sit down and talk to you to find out what help you need with your English. As well, we will ask you to do a short exercise so that we can find out your level. This will help us to find the best classes for you, where you can learn what you want at the right level for you. We will also talk to you about the best times for you to come to lessons.

Will I have to take an exam?
No, but we can give you the chance to prepare for some qualifications that are recognised all over the country.

Do I have to pay?
Most people get their ESOL classes free. When you come for your talk, bring your documents with you (passport, ID card) and we will be able to tell you straight away.

When do I start?
Our classes begin in September and run through to July (apart from holidays, of course). The year is split into three 12 week terms. We would hope to put you into a suitable class within a week of your interview.
